Well today is one of those days that you I would just as soon not have many of. It all started in the wee hours of the morning when Luke woke up sick. Paul and I kind of have an unspoken understanding. If Luke calls out during the night he goes, if Katherine cries I go. I did hear Luke call out and Paul get up but I did not hear anything else. Apparently Luke threw up and Paul called for me a couple of times. He said when he came back to bed I was sleeping hard - obviously! I felt awful that I did not know what all was going on. Luke has done this a few times before. If he eats too much or too quickly he will throw it up later. He only threw up once and then went back to sleep.
I knew he could not go to school so he stayed home with Katherine and I. Our day was trucking a long pretty well. Luke did not feel bad so we played, read and he even had a good appetite. During lunch I noticed he had what appeared to be an insect bite right under his eye. I literally watched it swell up while we ate. Luke has always been sensitive to insect bites since he was an infant. I did not think much about it. After lunch Luke fell asleep on the couch. Katherine and I went to her room for awhile so Luke could sleep in peace. When I went back to check on him later he woke up. When he raised up I immediately noticed a splotchy looking "rash" on his temple and going down his cheek. Since he had just woken up he was not very talkative. In fact, I couldn't really get him to say anything. (This is not unusual when he is woken up unexpectedly). I had him sit up and I lifted up his shirt. The rash was all over his shoulder and back and he said it itched. About the same time Katherine started letting me know, very loudly, that she was hungry.
I called the pediatrician's office to get their advice and to see what the dosage for Bendaryl is for Luke's weight. We decided I would watch it and see if it continued to spread. The nurse advised me to make sure he did not develop blurry vision, etc. I had him look at the TV and tell me how many balls there were, what color and so forth which he did without difficulty. He said he was itching. I gave him Benadryl and within a few minutes the rash vanished before my eyes. Luke did have a low-grade temp so I also gave him some Ibuprofen later that evening. In the midst of all this my Mom called, Paula called and Paul called all offering their help. I must admit, I was a little panicked. I had never seen anything like it. I was not sure if I needed to rush him to the doctor or what. Within an hour of it appearing the rash was gone and Luke was pretty much his normal self. Luckily Paul was home a little early today so he was able to "take over" for a little while so I could decompress from the afternoon's events. I did try to take some pictures of the rash but they did not turn out. Guess we will talk to Dr. P about this the next time we see her. Paul had several allergies growing up and it looks like Luke is going to follow in his daddy's footsteps.
